Michael Lynk is a Canadian legal scholar and human rights expert, best known for his role as the United Nations Special Rapporteur on the situation of human rights in the Palestinian territories occupied since 1967. He held this position from March 2016 until May 2022, succeeding John Dugard and preceding Francesca Albanese. As Special Rapporteur, Lynk was responsible for monitoring, reporting, and advising on human rights issues in the occupied territories, regularly presenting findings to the UN Human Rights Council and the UN General Assembly. Lynk is a professor emeritus at Western University’s Faculty of Law in London, Ontario, where he taught labor law, constitutional law, and international and Canadian human rights law for over two decades. He has authored and edited several books and academic works, including contributions to labor law and international law, and has published widely in law review journals and edited collections. His academic expertise and publications have contributed to national and international discourse on labor and human rights law. During his tenure as Special Rapporteur, Lynk produced numerous reports and statements on the human rights situation in the occupied Palestinian territories, focusing particularly on the impact of Israeli settlements, military occupation, and policies on Palestinian civilians. His final report in 2022 concluded that Israel’s practices in the occupied territories amounted to apartheid, a finding that drew significant attention and debate. Lynk’s work was both praised by human rights advocates and criticized by some pro-Israel groups and officials. Lynk has received recognition for his humanitarian work, including being named to London Mayor Matt Brown’s honour list in 2015. He remains active in public discourse on international law and human rights, continuing to publish and speak on these issues after his UN mandate ended.
